Beni Ourain rugs are undeniably amazing options because they fit all types of interiors no matter what style you’re going for. On top of that, these rugs come with an incredible history and culture, giving them that unique look and authenticity that cannot be replicated.
Do you have some Moroccan rugs at home, or you’re planning to get one soon? Then you might be wondering where they come from, particularly the Beni Ourain rugs. Well, you’re in the right place because that’s what this post is all about. Read on and find out the story behind Beni Ourain rugs and why they are very special:
Beni Ourain Rugs’ Colorful History
The history of the rugs we so love today dates back to the ancient Berber tribes that hail from the Middle Atlas Mountain in Morocco, specifically the Taza region. The sheep that belonged to these tribes have always been known to produce the best wool in the world with the softest texture.
In fact, these rugs were originally used as blankets and beds to help people retain warmth during the colder months. They are handwoven by the women of the Beni Ourain tribe, each one a freehand representation of their personal stories and their daily lives. It is for this reason that there are no two Beni Ourain rugs that are exactly the same (at least not the authentic ones). Some of them feature symbols that are distinct and represent a specific family, given that the pattern and the technique for making them are passed on from mother to daughter. On top of that, each one is unique and is considered a priceless piece of art, although there are some common themes that are interpreted differently by the Beni Ourain women. Some of those themes include nature, religious belief, fertility and childbirth, rural life, and more. At the same time, the material used is 100% undyed sheep wool.
That is why the Moroccan rugs from the Beni Ourain tribe are considered among the most prestigious types that you can find today.
Why You Should Have a Beni Ourain Rug in Your Home
Not only do Beni Ourain Moroccan rugs look elegant and luxurious, but they are also extremely comfortable because, as mentioned, they are made from the softest wool from some of the best sheep in the world. Once you experience walking on these rugs, you can imagine how it must be like to walk on clouds!
These rugs are perfect for those who want a Boho feel in their home and those who want to inject some culture and adventure into the design elements of their home. Given that they are made from undyed sheep wool, they can match any style and décor in the home. Furthermore, there are rugs with monochrome patterns, while others have unique symbols that could be a great conversation starter with your guests. Also, despite their long history and tradition, they can still look modern if that’s what you’re going for.
Conclusion
Given their rich history and impeccable quality, there’s absolutely no reason for you not to get one or more of these Beni Ourain rugs for your home. Suppose you want to gain the benefits of a unique design and luxurious material. In that case, you have to make sure that what you are getting are real Moroccan rugs that come from the wonderful Beni Ourain tribe sold by reputable sources like Atlas Weavers.

The colourful carpet and tea table with golden chapiters were added to give the space less formal and enhance the complexity of each space. See also: Dressing Room Rugs: The Comfort at Your Feet Hilary White Interior Design, by award-winning principal designer, Hilary White, is a high-end, boutique design firm, that promises a multitude of design services. Hilary’s distinguished aesthetic has earned her praise and accolades from all over the world. “My creative process begins by listening to what my clients need functionally and what they desire aesthetically. A well-designed home brings peace, comfort, happiness, and functionality to its inhabitants. This is always my goal and always will be”. -Hilary White Couple Rug
Rug’Society was an important part of this project, making a statement in the master bedroom and giving it a romantic and eclectic touch. The whole design is very glam and luxurious as requested by the clients, who wished for a more traditional look with eclectic accents, including lots of textured wallpaper accents and a darker sexier color palette throughout. A black and white aesthetic played into the designs as well, being present all over the house, and the idea for the master bedroom was to create a comfortable space within all the exquisite furnishings. The ceilings were over 15′ throughout the home, so Hilary White decided to paint them darker to visually bring them down a bit, so the spaces felt cozier and less daunting. It is important to note that the designer responsible for the project believes that Couple Rug was not only the “perfect accent for this room given the eclectic vibe”, but also for bringing a romantic and magic feeling, in honor to the couple who own the house. For the master bathroom, the same rules were followed, so the dramatic proportions evoked space as well as an easy flow, making it the perfect place to relax after a long day. All the colors of both spaces balance impressively and are in line with the Pantone choices for 2021, symbolizing the vivacity of the owners throughout the Illuminating yellow and their strength with the Ultimate Grey. Finally, inside the master bedroom, there is a huge closet to explore, that will benefit from the exterior lighting and the golden details, despite the darker colors on the furniture. This partnership between Rug’Society and Hilary White Interior Design Firm made this renovation absolutely mesmerizing and unforgettable, turning the couple’s dream home into a reality. See also: Luxurious Rugs Inspiration From Elliot James Interiors Design Talks: Our first InterviewOur first interview was with C.Bhogilal Westend: an organization that works in retail, with a 5000 sqft area showroom in Vile Parle (West), Mumbai. The company has specialized in ceramic tiles, sanitary, fitting & faucets among other bathroom items. The company is a family-run business, and each project has a specialized team that will attend small and large projects, taking into account all of the project’s particularities. If there is one thing to be sure of, is that this company will always know what kind of product perfectly fits your bathroom! Design Talks – C.Bhogilal Westend – The Interview with Mr. Kekin ShahDesign Talks had the pleasure of interviewing Mr. Kekin Shah, responsible for C.Bhogilal West End. Being a 108-year-old firm and 4th generation in the business, it has started as a small showroom on the south side of Mumbai. The company is now a leading force in the luxury bathroom market in India, has expanded to Delhi and Bangalore. Maison Valentina is one of their trusted brands and, according to Mr. Kekin, a reference due to its quality, high-end design, and overall service. As Mr. Kekin Shah explains “We started a small showroom on the south side of Mumbai, trading mostly tiles and bathroom accessories from England and Italy and slowly we started bringing some artifacts from Italy and selling them to the maharajas and royal families of India.” And with the advancement of the years and the flow of the decades, they were able to become more than a sanitary brand or faucet company, they started to also become a tile company, delivering only goods of the highest quality! In 1998 imports were allowed in India in a big way, and the company started importing tiles and sanitary from Italy, England, and Germany and we tried to work in conjunction with other companies. “We did a good job but in 2010 I realized the world was getting smaller with the internet and you can get any product in the world. I looked at the bathroom industry and the interior industry and I said “My company is more than 80 years old, we will get lost”. So we get up the value chain and started doing niche luxury bathroom faucets and small finishes.” The company then started to direct its work into specific niches and was able to greatly expand and grow. Being this a family business, it was important to focus on what the company’s offer was, they decided not to invest in kitchens and decided to turn themselves into country market leaders in the bathroom business. As Mr. Kakin so politely points out: “We kept our focus on the bathroom businesses, instead of focusing on another thing and losing our focus.“ Being focused on the bathroom business, it was only natural that C. Bhogilal WestEnd would eventually come across Maison Valentina, forming a partnership that started in 2015 and will, hopefully, be lifelong. Regarding the specific choice of Maison Valentina, Mr. Kekin Shah said that “looking at the companies in the ’90s and 2000, we saw that one of the most luxury bathroom boutique companies was Maison Valentina. They have great production, great quality, great finishes, and fantastic communication with the team. That’s why we decided to work with this company, and we love the design, its aesthetics. We have been working with each other for 5 years and we are very happy.“ Being focused on the bathroom business, it was only natural that C. We have been working with each other for 5 years and we are very happy.“ Mr. Kekin was asked about how he felt about Maison Valentina’s products, mentioning the KOI Collection as the stand-out of all design companies! And the truth is, our sister brand could not be prouder of this dazzling collection! The company has had some fantastic highlights over the years, being an old company that is very focused on client relationships “and working with at least 60% of the top clients of our country, there is not a single client I would specify, but I remember two years back a top Bollywood actor’s house. We decored his four bathrooms, all the consoles, all the showers, and all the basins. It was a great project, I really enjoyed working there.” Truly an amazing highlight that positions this company firmly in the high-end luxurious business. At the moment, however, Mr. Kekin mentions that the company will open a new showroom in Delhi in June 2021! “I think we should order Maison Valentina’s products in the next couple of months” he kindly adds! The great thing about New Delhi is, as he mentions, that the market is larger, with many more cities and markets covered by Delhi, and bigger with more money and influence involved, and that means greater opportunities! The company’s borders also expanded to the world, not only India, and given the number of Indian immigrants staying in countries like Dubai come to bargain for products in their home country, the company can firmly say they are represented in both the African continent and the European one. When asked about favorite trends, Mr. Kakin mentions that he thinks that “some little classic is coming back. After years of some contemporary and minimalistic interiors, I think classic is coming back. People want to see more rich luxury, colors like gold and silver. Because with the PVD technology in the faucets, you have 10 to 15 years with faucets without being scratched, so people are getting back into colored faucets and exaggerating and it is exciting. Instead of some dull colors and tones, that’s very exciting for us.“ The C.Bhogilal Westend‘s leader also states that regarding the style differences in the design processes between Europe and India “there is a very systematic way of working. Everything is pre-designed, pre-ordered with a styling, including bathroom cabinets, bathroom showers, bathroom enclosures, everything is pre-designed pieces. We have almost 90% of the products being customized, including the bathtub, the shower enclosures, the floor, everything is customized. India has very skilled and not so expensive labor, so we can do customized products very quickly and it won’t be that expensive. Doing anything customized in Italy or Portugal will cost you five times the price in India. Customization is the key to doing business here.” When questioned about the prestigious India Design 2021, he mentions that he was skeptical about being online but then he saw the reports stating there were at least 50 000 architects and designers logging in, and everything became more exciting and rewarding. Regarding his work philosophy, Mr. Kakin described his motto as “saying I am not in retail or product space. I am in the services space. I tell all my salespeople and my after-sales people that we are in the service space, to give them the best service possible. This is the foundation and what makes us stay ahead of the race.” He ends up adding that the service is what, in the end, will make all the difference in assuring the client’s trust. The studio has completed a wide range of projects from residential design to commercial pop-ups and worked with celebrity clients like Youtube’s Jus Reign and Ask Kimberly, NBA’s Patrick Patterson and radio host Blake Carter. Jaclyn won Interior Designer of the Year at the 2018 Notable Awards. The award sits proudly on the mantle of her Bloor West townhouse, which received its own Spaces by Jacflash makeover in 2017. Spaces by JacflashSpaces by Jacflash is an internationally recognized interior design company with expertise in residential, commercial, hospitality and retail projects. Based in Toronto, Spaces by Jacflash combines extraordinary talent to produce spaces described as cutting edge and timeless. Spaces by Jacflash – Serene and Stylish CondoSpaces by Jacflash revamped a once dark, dated and empty condo into a modernly chic and functional living space. Spaces by Jacflash replaced a drab midcentury credenza with a lighter, white oak credenza with metallic details. The studio paired this metallic credenza with a round and radiant antiqued golden mirror, which transformed the somber kitchen to feel bright and contemporary. On a long, characterless white wall, Spaces by Jacflash adhered a faux brick wallpaper to create drama and industrial charm. They then installed 4 acrylic accent shelves to the wall, displaying glassware, photos, cocktail books and greenery. In the previously unused dining area, the team added a white dining table and matching bench, 4 wishbone chairs and swapped out a dated track light with a modern, multi-light chandelier. The brighter furniture and lighting, organic elements and industrial design generate warmth, comfort, and character. Spaces by Jacflash were on a budget in the living room as their client opted to keep their existing sofa, coffee table and media unit. The studio team brought in a new rug, side chair and side tables and lighting to add unity, purposefulness, and serenity to the space. Inspired By The LookSpaces by Jacflash – Rachel David’s Living RoomSpaces by Jacflash amped up a quirky condo into a more sophisticated and put-together living space. The studio found inspiration from eclectic, traditional styles. Every piece they chose serves more than one purpose and can live in her home for years. The brick that the team used around the fireplace is a porcelain tile that serves to make the mantle look more finished. Spaces by Jacflash created a gallery wall above the couch, with personal artwork the client originally had. This living room is bright and colourful, but the only actual source of colour is in the art and accessories, which the studio loves, as the space can be easily transformed. Finishing touches like curtains and plants really make this living room feel like it has been put together over time and fits their client’s lifestyle and personality. Spaces by Jacflash – A Contemporary Queen St. LoftSpaces by Jacflash has transformed a once dated Toronto loft into a contemporary, elegantly eclectic bedroom. By combining a grey colour story, endless textures, tailored elegance and ravishing features, this room establishes the perfect marriage between masculinity and glamour. Inspired By The LookSpaces by Jacflash – French Inspired Modern BedroomThis 18th-century, French inspired bed captures the linearity and rectangular forms associated with that period. Crafted of hardwood and richly upholstered, this bed is carefully distressed to achieve a weathered antique look. So as to lightly modernize the space, Spaces by Jacflash paired this bed with a strikingly simple nightstand whose clean-lined shape is enhanced by a glossy lacquer finish and a back-painted glass facade. The mirrors above the nightstands are custom made and framed on the wall, opening up this condo space and adding movement and light throughout. Spaces by Jacflash – Light & Tranquil Living SpaceSpaces by Jacflash transformed this King West condo into a light and tranquil residence. The living area was designed for their client to unwind by the fire and socialize with their loved ones. The deep-set, modular cloud sofa, creates a weightless feeling throughout. Placing an ottoman in the middle of the configuration allows for easy access in and out of the arrangement and keeps the space open to the incredible view of the Toronto skyline. The studio built a feature, fireplace mantle half wall on a once blank and drab facade and laid it with a smooth and lustrous veined tile, to highlight a refined and elegant semblance. Spaces by Jacflash combined a jute rug, a round drum coffee table and a tiled niche brimming with firewood to add an organic and accomplished approach to space. Spaces by Jacflash – Scandinavian Shiplap RoomSpaces by Jacflash balanced functionality and aesthetics in this Scandinavian style TV room. The studio combined cosy and warm textiles with clean lines and bright, muted tones. They covered the walls of this room with a vertical shiplap, adding height, warmth and character and a custom ottoman dubs as a footrest and a coffee table for their client to enjoy their movie night snacking. Spaces by Jacflash – Lively Liberty Village CondoSpaces by Jacflash brought life to this once cold, cluttered and cramped condo. The modern sofa has an extra-deep seat, crisp tailoring, a thin frame, and cast metal legs, simultaneously having a strong and subtle presence. The studio paired this sofa with a rope-like ottoman, a glamorous brass pedestal marble top coffee table and brass and black velvet side chair. To bring this all together they added black velvet curtains and an alluring but cosy loom area rug. Spaces by Jacflash also paired the existing dining table with glamorous acrylic chairs and a refined shiny brass bell pendant. A black cowhide rug sits below the dining set to add warmth and the mirror creates the illusion of a large space. The finishing touch was to swap out the old, dated, cookie-cutter door hardware for sleek, modern, matte black handles. Spaces by Jacflash – Romantic Roncesvalles CondoThis Spaces by Jacflash project began with an empty, newly finished condo in the Roncesvalles area in West Toronto. The condo was about as cookie cutter as you can get, but when Spaces by Jacflash finished with the space, it was transformed into a one of a kind home with elegant and cozy character. The studio combined elements of industrial furnishings with a polished antique crystal chandelier. Rustic features paired with gold touches transformed this space into a romantic, organic place to call home. The dominant feature in this space was the barn-board wood wall that extended over and above the kitchen. This created a warmth and unusual texture throughout the home that one does not typically get in a condo. Other personal touches included the gold framed photo wall displaying the couple’s wedding photos. In the client’s bedroom, a carpet hung behind their bed, acting as an artistic headboard, a simple yet dramatic effect to the space that also drowns out any neighbourly noise. Spaces by Jacflash – Patrick PattersonSpaces by Jacflash has designed NBA, Toronto Raptors player Patrick Patterson’s home at the Trump Hotel Residences in Toronto. From Patrick’s room featuring brass, a royal blue tufted settee and a hair-on-hide ottoman. Spaces by Jacflash – Femininely Textures BedroomThis bedroom by Spaces by Jacflash is one of their most loved spaces that the studio have designed thus far. The team adore how femininely textural and glamorous this room is. The gold bed frame has clean, modern lines, with a lower headboard that does not draw attention to the lower ceilings. Having a queen sized bed allowed for two large, mismatched night stands that each has equal presence. The custom made neon sign and framed photograph from Houseleven accompanied with the white brick wallpaper tones down the femininity to give a more urban feel. Spaces by Jacflash – Jus Reign’s CondoSpaces by Jacflash was super excited to work on Youtuber Jus Reign’s Downtown Toronto condo. The theme Jus Reign requested was reignforest. The studio pulled some of his existing furniture with new pieces, added organic textures, tons of plants and warmer tones throughout the space. To avoid being too thematic with the reignforest vibe, the team chose a natural colour palette with organic textures. To brighten up an otherwise boring hallway, also added a green vinyl to introduce the theme to the rest of the space. Typically condos come with standard, flush mount lighting, so Spaces by Jacflash swapped out those lights with a matte black pendant and a great alternative to pot lights. All new white bedding, a natural coloured jute rug and hanging sconces frame the existing furniture – you would not be able to tell you were in a condo by looking at the faux wood beams on the ceiling! Spaces by Jacflash – Eclectic Uptown Living and Dining RoomSpaces by Jacflash transformed a small, dysfunctional townhouse into a chic and airy space. The studio made it a priority that every piece of furniture would serve a purpose for their client. They had the main wall in the dining room wallpapered in a Dalmatian print, adding warmth and texture to the space. The statement piece they chose for the dining area was a teardrop capiz chandelier, making the otherwise small room feel grand in scale. The tin-framed band of brass on the chandelier ties in the accessories in brass and black, making these pieces stand out but ultimately contribute to the unified aesthetic. The living room is colourful and eclectic: Spaces by Jacflash accessorized with vintage items, personal pictures, and some modern pieces like the ottoman and side tables, giving the space personality and a comfortable feel. Overall the studio utilized every inch of the space appropriately, to maximize function and allow their client to feel at home! See Also: Amazing Interior Inspiration from Top Paris Designers Design Projects by Christian LiaigreChristian Liaigre, the French interior design legend and entrepreneur, has died at the age of 77. Born in La Rochelle, a small coastal town in the West of France, the interior design Hall-of-Famer honed his skills at the Beaux art and then at the Arts décoratifs. Worldwide Interior Design ProjectsHis designs were now to have simple, sincere and fluid lines, allowing the beauty and balance of the design speak of itself. An expert of modern minimalism, Christian Liaigre rose to the prominence in the design industry during the 1980s with his perfectly proportioned designs. 1. 77 Faubourg Saint-Honoré Paris ProjectDesigned and built in the image of the residential projects that Liaigre carries out around the world, 77 Faubourg Saint-Honoré is a unique place open to professionals and the public alike. 2. Liaigre x Obumex Project in KnokkeLiaigre has been collaborating for many years on interior design projects in Belgium and is opening a showroom at Obumex in Knokke le Zoute. INSPIRED BY THE LOOK 3. Double sides of Caribbean, Saint BarthélémyIt was a beautiful garden that Liaigre wanted to preserve that was the starting point for this project. The original house, a 1950s building, was torn down. The new construction had to strictly adhere to local constraints that require building on the footprint without being able to expand either horizontally or in height. This contemporary home features jack-mounted solar visors that filter light and close in a storm. Behind the owner’s suite, a garden-side exterior hallway rests on teak pillars, a nod to colonial style, and leads to a covered terrace. 4. Whaler’s Island in Nantucket, USANantucket is an island in the North Atlantic, once dedicated to whaling, whose former inhabitants inspired Herman Melville for Moby Dick. Today, it is jealously protected by norms that impose to build identically. The project had meet a double challenge: find a way to avoid the ban on expansion, and transform a dune beaten by the winds into a garden that seems to have always existed. To make up for the missing space, the solution was to build several houses. They are connected by a landscape, designed with the Dutch landscape architect Piet Oudlof. This garden of flowers and tall grasses, which respects the local biotope and in which a pond has been installed, seems to be part of nature. 5. The Urban Greece Project in AthènesThis townhouse on the heights of Athens has the charm and freshness of a resort. INSPIRED BY THE LOOK 6. Lumière du Nord – Knokke Le Zoute, BelgiqueIt is the singular softness of the northern light that served as the guiding thread for the design of this penthouse in the seaside resort of Knokke Le Zoute. A sumptuous “place with a view” located between the sea and a nature reserve, in which Liaigre has tried to express the poetic atmosphere of the North Sea. 7. Motu tane Project in Bora BoraFormerly owned by French explorer Paul Emile Victor, Motu Tane had been devastated by a violent cyclone. 8. New York Factory ProjectRespecting the dimensions of the building and the character of the neighborhood, the three levels were fitted out with the desire to privilege space (notably by avoiding clutter of furniture and objects), and to express a refinement without ostentation. This sobriety or restraint, which qualifies the Liaigre style, emphasizes the modernity without fuss that emerges from the place. INSPIRED BY THE LOOK 9. Urban at sea Yacht ProjectLiaigre wanted to make this giant of the seas, combining technology and elegance, a rare and sober object. They’ve grown really popular worldwide for their classic geometric patterns and sunset color story. However, despite countless surges in acclaim and admiration, there’s more to these carpets than what meets the eye.
There’s no dispute to the fact that Moroccan rugs are truly beautiful. It’s one of the reasons they’re coveted everywhere and easily recognizable. However, some people would have some paranoia about just how pretty a traditional rug was. Many rug makers were so in awe of their rug that they believed it would attract bad or evil spirits. Superstition wasn’t out of the ordinary at the time, but it was interesting how strongly they believed the Moroccan rugs would bring in unwanted guests. To fix that, makers would be burning the carpet’s edges and affecting its appearance to make sure evil spirits stay away.
Most people may recognize Moroccan rugs to come in shades of red, blue, green, and yellow. They also come in neutral colors of white and black. Although this is naturally linked to the culture of Morocco, it’s also been linked to the Islamic religion. It may come as no surprise to some, considering there were many Muslims in Morocco. If you look at the Muslim prayer rugs used five times daily, you may notice a similar pattern to your traditional Moroccan rug.
The most prominent pattern of Moroccan rugs are probably the zig-zags and lines on top of each other. However, that’s not the only style they can come in. Moroccan rugs can come in all sorts of intricate designs and shapes, with some featuring animals like camels and fish downs or other entities like cupids and dragons.
Many people may fear the worst when it’s time to clean the Moroccan rugs, but it’s going to be just like any other wool, usually when it’s an authentic one. All that’s needed is some cold water and detergent to remove any dust or stain that got on. Baking soda can also be used to get rid of the odors without affecting the color or design of the carpet itself.
Authentic Moroccan rugs come in a wide price range that can depend on the size and how vintage a model is. It’s also important to keep in mind that Moroccan rugs do contain sheep wool and are handmade, which is why the price is kept so high. Most rugs can reach up to $2,500, but some antique and rare designs can jack up the price further. Conclusion Learning more about the Moroccan rug can provide food for thought about how complex something like a floor covering can be. It’ll also spark your interest and appreciation for just how much quality goes into the rug. Want to check out some authentic Moroccan rugs?
